Mark Abankwa, founder of The Urban Accountant Inc. (T.U.A), built his career on one guiding principle: creating a single, trusted space where Canadians can access all their financial service needs. Growing up without a family background in business or finance, Mark learned early on that navigating the complex financial landscape requires both knowledge and practical understanding. His mission is to empower individuals and families to make informed financial decisions, combining professional guidance with technology, community education, and personalized services.

Mark’s journey began at Sheridan College, where he earned a diploma in Business Administration with a major in Accounting. He was on track to continue his studies at Guelph University to become a Chartered Management Accountant (CMA). However, a pivotal experience with his family accountant reshaped his path. Accompanying his father to prepare their taxes, Mark observed the high costs, long lines, and complexity involved in the process. Though he had studied tax accounting, seeing the real-world impact inspired him to specialize in taxes, realizing he could make the process more accessible, affordable, and client-focused.

Determined to gain hands-on experience, Mark enrolled in specialized tax accounting programs while working with multiple accounting firms. Instead of monetary compensation, he asked for mentorship and training, gradually building the expertise and confidence to serve clients independently. From filing taxes for friends and going door-to-door in his community, to operating out of his mother’s basement, Mark steadily expanded his practice. Eventually, he leased his own office, hired full-time staff, and established a reputation for reliability and excellence.

Through years of personal service, clients began to trust Mark not only with their taxes but with broader financial matters. This motivated him to pursue further financial education, earning his LLQP license to provide life, health insurance, and investment guidance. Recognizing the gaps in traditional financial services—where advice often fails to consider a client’s full circumstances—Mark envisioned a comprehensive solution. T.U.A integrates tax accounting, financial planning, insurance, and investment guidance into one platform, supported by educational seminars, community events, and user-friendly technology.

Today, The Urban Accountant Inc. serves clients across Canada, combining certified, experienced accountants with innovative fintech solutions. Mark’s vision remains rooted in his personal journey: making professional financial services accessible, personalized, and practical for every Canadian, regardless of background.
